Introduction - Opportunities - Links to Industry - Periods of Study - Faculty Postgraduate Credit Accumulation Network
The School of Engineering offers a wide range of courses leading to diplomas, degrees, and research degrees as well as short courses relevant to industrial needs. Postgraduate activities are an important element of the school's work and play a significant role in enhancing the undergraduate experience at the same time as providing valuable training and development for postgraduate staff.
Opportunities are available for students to register and study for the degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and/ or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) on programmes of research agreed with and supervised by members of staff. Details of the subject areas in which supervision is offered are given in this booklet but this list is not exclusive and candidates with interests in other areas are welcome to make further enquiries.
Much of our research is funded by industry and we often work closely with our industrial collaborators to solve real problems currently facing these companies and it is common for external supervision of projects to be arranged with workers from industry or, occasionally, from other academic institutions. Our laboratories are very well equipped with the most up to date facilities to allow state of the art research to be carried out.
The periods of study involved are normally two years for MPhil and three years for PhD on a full-time basis. However , arrangements are possible for those currently in employment to register on a part-time basis in which case the periods of registration are normally three years and four years.
In addition to the schoolal activities outlined above the school participates in the Faculty Postgraduate Credit Accumulation Network, which offers the opportunity of a MSc by Research. In this case students are required to undertake a taught programme of study and a Project/Dissertation. The Project/Dissertation contributes two third to the total credits required for the award and the remainder is derived from the taught course programme. This form of study has proved particularly attractive to part-time students.
